A lot of my Non-profit sector or NGO clients are organisations that work with children of different abilities or children from the marginalised sections of the social spectrum. Here is an organization that strives to provide education and skills to a section of children who otherwise have no access to any of it.
Non-formal Education and Skills Training (NEST) Center is a non-profit school located in Kothanur in Bangalore city. It is run by the Mamre Trust. This school has been in existence for the last couple of years and has grown from being run at a small hut to a property which formerly housed a playschool.
The children at this school are all from poor and underprivileged backgrounds. A majority of the kids are children of construction workers and migrant labourers. They have no permanent homes in the city and live in impoverished dwellings in the city. For all these kids, NEST has been the first exposure to any form of education or creative activity.
I worked on creating visual material for NEST for their upcoming website. It was wonderful to spend a day at the school with these children, listening to their personal stories, watching them say and write their ABCs, engaged in their playtime and other activities. It was a fun shoot.
